Magfest 10

When: January 5-8, 2012
Where: National Harbor, MD
Hotel: Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center
201 Waterfront Street
National Harbor, MD 20745

This was a big year for MAGFest. They were in a new hotel, and with the extra space they had available, their membership swelled to over 6000 people. Amazingly enough, this was not accompanied by an increase in incidents. Over all, this was a smoothly run MAGFest and we all had a great time.

That is not to say there were no problems. Sure we had our share of drunks in teh hallways and lobbies, but none were violent or overly belligerent. We had a problem with people smoking in the stairwells, which made the Hotel a little upset. All in all though, it was fewer problems than in past years, and even some of our traditional troublemakers seemed to be more sedate.

At the end of the day, I had a blast. It was a ton of fun. Yes it ran 24 hours a day still, and that gets hard on pulling duty shifts, but it was still a good time. All the crew were on top of things, and we had no real problems with making sure people got fed and rested between shifts. The Chefs were helpful there as they regularly brought us coffee and sandwiches. Thanks guys!

We pulled security duty for Nobuo Uematsu and his group the Earthbound Paps. Don’t worry if you don’t know who he is, his name means something in gaming circles. Needless to say, his show was packed, and the autograph line was over 3 hours long. We impressed him enough that he invited a couple of our crew to dinner the next day. While I was not fortunate enough to have been there, I guess it was a lot of fun.

While I saw many old faces at the con, people who had been there for the exciting years, I also got to work with a few new faces. Everyone worked had, had a good time, and helped make this MAGFest the smoothest one I have been to. I am looking forward to being able to go next year.
